Updates.. Last Saturday was the MSSA Orientation!! It was a fun event, met pple from back home and from malaysia, again, the age is a cause for surprise. There's only one other boy who's 17 and i haven't met him yet. After the orientation party, Nicki(the president) asked us newbies to go along for dinner...LOCAL FOOD! Of course, i jumped at the chance. But it was all the way up in Markham, but i guess its better than going all the way to Missisauga. So the 11 of us who agreed to go piled into 2 cars, Nicki and Kyle were driving. The place was called Coconut Island(hmmm) , but the menu looked so gooooood. Asam Laksa, Nasi Lemak, Fried Hokkien Mee, Mee Goreng, Curry Rice...no yong tau foo! Sian. It was good to eat some local stuff after a month! Yes a month! (we'll get to tt later), so the food was grrrreat! Mainly cause i was hungry. but of course cannot compare to back home in SG or Malaysia but its close enough and ya can't really complain lah.. got is better than dont have. FEELS LIBERATING TO USE SINGLISH!!!! After dinner, we wanted to go to the beach, but that fell through..hmm dunno why. I realised i can't really do anything here, the legal age is 19! dammit. So Nicki drove us back to School and from there, i took the bus back to TPKF's house, although it was almost 10 at night, 60 did'nt come into York so late so me and this chinese professor and who i assume, his girlfriend, walked out to Steeles to take the bus, but not before getting lost, it was quite uh..well, i used my sucky chinese and they said i sounded Tawainese. So its been a month and one day. I'm glad that's over..Its been loong..but its been great. I'm definitely not going to stay in Residence next year, most likely i will rent out Aunty Diane's house. But i do want to find someone to stay with me. But everyone seems pretty settled..oh well..must look harder i guess. York Village seems like a very popular place, must look into that. Dorm is like prisoooon!! Only advantage i can think of, waking up late. But conS outweighs PRO. I think i'm going to miss Aunty Di when she's gone back to HK. Friday is like the WOOOOOO day. Movies and shopping. and its also the day i leave this prison. This saturday is the wedding at the 4 seasons hotel! yay! I'm looking forward to it! free food and booze. oh thats why. plus apparently, the groom's mom is wearing a 7 thousand dollar dress..wait since when did i care about stuff like that? oh well, hope its gonna be fun. I've never been to a wedding at the 4 seasons hotel. very exclusive. Ignore this rant: FUgging MAN UTD!!! ITS READING FOR F*CKS SAKE! i'll try to take some pictures of the wedding. Even though i don't even know who's wedding it is. I was invited along. heh. Okay that'll be all for now. ```````````````````````````````````````````````````` Yiing: You don't have any sweaters! Me: yes i do, i've got three sweaters. Yiing: 3 Sweaters is not enough! Me: yeah, but i HAVE sweaters. soliloquy88 at 8:33 AM | Comment ~~~~~ Tuesday, September 19, 2006
Well im starting to get used to this.. Lectures, classes, reading, tutorials.. Tmr i'll attend the 12 pm lecture on introduction to communications and maybe the course director will allow me to enrol in the class since you can't do it online..anymore. I can imagine what it would be like : (walks into big lecture hall) Me: Excuse me sir, i'm an undecided major for first year but i'm leaning towards majoring in communications studies in my second and i was wondering whether i could join this class? CD: NO! Spaces are limited for COMN majors only. Me: Oh well uh..what do you suggest i do then? i only have 24 credits currently. CD: (ignores me) Of course i'm hoping its not going to turn out that way. You have to have a minimum of 30 credits to be able to stay in Residence. For my 2nd year, i maybe considering staying in Aunty Di's house. Since she's in HK for like 11 months of the year, she has offered to let me stay there. Its so convenient to take the bus from her house to school. And its so close to Yonge Street, with its numerous coffee places, bookstores and Centrepoint Mall! Plus, it'll help save money on residence and I can do my own cooking and washing and all of that stuff you do when you have to live on your own. And its a PROPER House. Yes yes it is a very good idea. I'll have to talk to mom n dad about that. Friday Aunty Di's taking me shoe shopping! I love shopping here! The clothes are really nice and they fit me perfectly! The accessories here are in way more variety and they're pretty cheap too. and the shoes!! And i can finally find nice, elegant heels that fit my huge feet. I should do all my shopping for clothes here. The people here place alot of emphasis on service. Like last week, went shopping for a dress for the September 30th Wedding, which is why all the shopping started in the first place, and we went to this store, Le Chateau, and i had to try on some dresses of course, so they assign a staff to you and she actually offers advice on what looks good on you and what accessories and what kind of shoes will go with the dress. It was a nice experience. I've got my weekends pretty full, this saturday's the MSSA orientation. Yay they go skiing in the winter! I'm going to actually get to ski!! Hope i won't suck at it.. according to Yiing, it seemed pretty hard. But as Lance Armstrong said, you'll never get on the bike if you keep worrying about falling off. Next Saturday's the wedding, Oct 14 is Rimpoche's talk (kinda looking forward to that, and i declared myself an atheist!), then there's the creative writing seminar at UofT, i'm sure MSSA has alot of other stuff planned..man i hope they wont clash! i really wouldnt want to miss anything.. Opp. Cost, this is not a good time to appear. Last week, there was a shooting rampage at a Montreal College and its really scary, back in SG when you hear about stuff like that, it all seems so distant. Right now, its like, it can actually happen anywhere, it can even happen in my school, since you're so much closer. There was a stabbing incident here at York too. It happened in Vanier Residence, which is really close to mine! Coming from SG, i think sometimes i take things like safety and security for granted. note to self: NEVER ASSUME. I received a very nice email from Parvin to watch out for myself and be more careful. Aw thanks Parvin! It was a really nice gesture! how did you know about the montreal college shooting anyway...haha. okay i'd best get to my reading. Now i know why they have reading week in February, to give u a headstart on the finals!!!!!!!! Soliloquy ends here. soliloquy88 at 6:21 AM | Comment ~~~~~ Wednesday, September 13, 2006
Okay first thing's first. I am allowed to change my major!! Woo Hoo!! *jumps around* I am changing it from Economics to Undecided. No more Math for me. Never was fated to rub shoulders with that subject. Went to see Angela Durante today, she was really nice and friendly! Since i am making such a HUGE switch, to different faculties, she can't really advise me on the courses to take.. So tmr, i have to go to the Faculty of Arts Academic Advisor to get more info on changing majors..but the main point is I CAN! Plus it won't affect the duration of my degree program. Right now, i've narrowed it down to 4 other possible majors - HR Management -Business Administration -Communication Studies -Linguistics And i wanna take up a language too..somehow sometime. French...German...frenchgerman? Something useful for the Europe trip of course! Now i need to sell my Econs Textbook..and return my Nats Sc course kit cause its the wrong one! and drop my econs courses..might still be able to get a refund. Just had Fajitas with Ellie and Jenni for dinner. Nothing much happened today..Had the econs class in the morning..and uhm..lets just say i'm glad i won't be going back there! Oh yeah, finally set up the Web Cam Anne gave me as a going away present! Set up my skype account too. Its weird using a web cam. actually i feel a tad uncomfortable cause someone's watching you. But i;ll use the web cam to show you other stuff...like uh..different angles of my room....? um well.. Web Cam is Fun! Guess i better get back to my reading...... Over and out>>>> soliloquy88 at 6:35 AM | Comment ~~~~~ Tuesday, September 12, 2006
STRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats one word i'll become accquainted with for an extensive period of time. I know its only the 2nd week of school bleurgh.. The Maths thing is killing meeeeeeeee! I am so rusty that you wouldn't believe it. and i'm pretty sure I don't have 12U Advanced Functions & Introductory Calculus. I found A maths hard! If that was then this is pure hell. I am not a math person. honestly. Never will be. How i miss my E maths. Starting to think i might have been a bit too hasty in selecting my major. gaaaaaaaaahh crap. I guess its not too late to change it..but i hate changing my decisions..once you make one, stick to it. Spent the whole weekend reading. and it took me 2 days to finish Beowulf!! I guess it sounds quick but trust me, felt way longer than that. A Book a Week! This is really something new..adjust adjust adjust! I've already started on 'Song of Roland'(bloody hell another freaking long poem!) so at least by the time weekend rolls about i'll be halfway through. Or at least i hope so. Then there's modes of reasoning to read, then there's the readings for Scientific change and then there's the mother of all my worries, Mathematics for Economic Analysis. Think i'd better consult the prof tmr. I hope i don't have to drop this course..hmm. Maybe i'll have to take up the other math course. Its starting to get cold around here..especially with the wind chill factor. today, i was walking to Vari Hall and then there was this huge gust of wind, and it was way colder than 20 degrees celsius(according to the electronic reader thing on the outside of the building) Must be a whole lot worse in winter. Watched NFL football last night! Opening weekend, NY Giants v IND Colts. Wooo the Manning Brothers! Love 'em! Peyton is awesome. Although I root for the Giants. ya... and thank u beatrice, for leaving a message on my tagboard. and yes, you haven't updated your blog in a long time. ahaha. On Saturday, talked to Angeline about our Europe Trip in 2008! Actually, she said that we should meet up when I get back and really discuss the details of it. But then that spiraled into an enthusiastic all out discussion on MSN. Well its hard not to get excited!! She had a WHOLE list of countries down already and I was still on Austria/Switzerland only. And Germany, of course. Before this we predicted who would qualify for the Tournament. It was fun. And I’m SO LOOKING FORWARD TO IT!!! ANGELINE & WEI RU PRESENT…. THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME: Football, Backpacking and Two Girls. How the game of football inspired 2 girls(or women, by that time) to embark on a great adventure..thousands of miles away across an entire continent………….. Anyone who wants to join us as we set out on this great adventure in 20 months time, we really won’t mind at all!! But we have to know you well enough to let u travel with us, interested applicants book an interview date! Naww I’m just kidding. IMPT Dates: get ready the funds (some extra cause we’ll be celebrating someone’s 20th !!) and clear your schedule by May 2008 and, sorry you don’t get to choose where to go cause WE WILL BE DOING THAT! Unless u manage to find out where our secret, low profile meetings with regards to trip planning will take place and then maybe we’ll let u have a say. But hey, its like going on a tour eh? U bring yourself, money and clothes, and the itenary’s set for you already. WARNING: if you are NOT a football fan then just dump this idea. Cause the main point, focus and purpose of this trip is FOOTBALL! But of course if you can stick out the football (about a month), it will STILL NOT be over as you have to endure us rehashing the tournament and predicting which club is going to buy which player based on their performances and how they are going to fit into the playing formation (e.g 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-5-1) that the certain club employs. Terms such as holding midfielder, diamond formation, hoofing long ball game, overlapping left back and inevitably, a few swear words will be thrown around here and there. But at least we’ll be moving around countries in trains so you can just distract yourself with the landscape and geography as we slowly chug along through the green fields of Europe. If you think that this is a good trip to come along if u want to learn about the beautiful game that is football, well uh, results may vary. We might be too tense or too excited or too depressed to explain to you how the game works, esp. in situations such as penalty shoot outs and injury time when there is a slender one goal lead, or when whoever’s team just got knocked out of the tournament. Otherwise you’ve got 20 months to learn! That’s 1 and 3/4 seasons of football(if you start now) and trust me, its enough! Oh and no consent forms will be issued for this trip. Fortress Europa, Here we come!! COMING MAY 2008. Okay sorry you had to read that. Actually, no, I thought it was pretty entertaining haha.* Zi lian-ing my own writing * AHHH I miss footie so much. I miss the abundance of football programs on the sports channels. The Sportscentre here is so foreign!!(well duh). I miss the wise cracks and the brit accents of SG’s sportscentre presenters. Was thinking of home again today..and hot yong tau fu soup with belacan(no relation to following sentence), so, strangely, I went to the SG idol website..and saw that Twohill got knocked out!! Hmm.. I thought he has the biggest fan base. But oh well..so it’s Jasmine, Jonathan and Hady. I kind of want the Girl to win. But uh wait..doesn’t this look familiar..Olinda, Taufik, Sly… yep, so final will be Jonathan v Hady. Then I don’t know who to side..kind of like both. Read their blogs too, which made me miss home even more. Maybe its because of the way they blog(all the Singaporean-ess), the food they mention, the people, places..Ermm. I should really quit saying I miss home, but I do. ALOOOOOOT!!! Oh just for the heck of it, I like Noodle and Mathilda too! The best girls in the contest! SG Idol: Just another aspect of home I miss. Okay that’s all for today lovely people! My hair is dry and so ends my excuse to stay on the computer instead of going to sleep. I want to say again, I miss everyone of you and SG very much! Anne: Best of Luck for the rest of the exams this year! Since we have to study, might as well just go all the way right? By April, we’ll both be done! ![]() ![]() soliloquy88 at 8:08 PM | Comment ~~~~~ Friday, September 08, 2006
last and 2nd day of classes of the 1st week of school. Econs class was well..ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its A maths..actually, i think its C maths. Like omfg. Crap i forgot all my a maths stuff already that was like 2 years ago! I'm kind of worried about this class.. Apparently a prerequisite is Grade 12 Calculus..what's that??? A level Math? I wonder how i got in to that course. I got exemptions for Macro and Micro since i already took them.. Oh man..oh man.. Lots of studying to do! In the afternoon had Humanities Tutorial, quite all right. Had to make introductions..i was the only Singaporean and international student there! Again. I haven't met any international student so far. The idea of trying to transfer to UofT in my 2nd year is looking appealing again..have to make sure my grades are good enough first. So took the bus back to TPKF's house. It was tiring. and commuting in canada is seriously no joke. I'm used to getting everywhere fast in SG..here, you're lucky to get to your destination in an hour..and that doesnt include the peak hours..which lasts from 4.30 to 7.30!!!! That's long. In SG, peak hours's like 6-7. Had my first hot meal in two days, Aunty SC made fab dinner. Campus food really sucks..or maybe i havent found the good places yet. I m so not loading my system with junk food for a whole year. So was feeling a little homesick and then DAD CALLED!! We talked for a while, since he hasn't spoke to me since i left..exactly 2 weeks ago. Seems like a loooong time. he told me that his toe, that i stepped on in a street in Phuket dropped off. WTH?? It turned black and dropped off. Its just the nail right DAd? uh..seriously not your whole toe?? I felt much better after Dad called. Really miss him. And my two dogs!!! No warm and furry thing that will lick you to death(well close) to hug until May!! Bao Bei!!!! Bek!!!!!!!!!!!! Here's another list of seemingly unimportant to you but strangely important to me things i miss: The Panasonic Viera LCD TV with the many speakers but only one in use most of the time. Sportscenter!!(Dawson, Joshi, Wong, Simson) Football Crazy!(P.J, Haikel, Penders) BBC News (yes i miss a news program) The Straits Times and The New Paper My Toilet and Bathroom My Desk Chair The Cable TV remote control My Harvard Mug Wearing Shorts and T-shirt all day long Milo Wan Ton Mee Watching Live Football matches instead of Live Tickers Most of my Cable channels Okay more pics. ![]() May not look THAT impressive............... ![]() BUT THE RECEIPT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh in case you were wondering, the EXACT courses i'm taking are Mathematical Analysis for Economists (Econs) Civilisation in Medieval and Renaissance Europe (Humanities) Reasoning and Morality ( Modes of Reasoning) Scientific Change (Natural Science) Hollywood: Old & New (Film) Yup those are my five classes. okay i think i feel well enough to go tackle the epic that is Beowulf tonight! Tag my tagboard eh? soliloquy88 at 10:21 AM | Comment ~~~~~ Thursday, September 07, 2006
First day of classes completed! Most of the people i've met today are so much older than me..i wonder why. Its the first day and i already have quite alot to do. Have to read a whole book (Beowulf: A Verse Translation) by next thursday for my humanities class and some tutorial for the Morality and Reasoning class. Ahhh..so fast got so many things to read liao... and not counting what might be coming in tmr's classes.. which reminds, i have an 8.30 am class tmr morning ! Sian. Went to the bookstore to get ALL my textbooks today..total Cost: 746 Bucks and two very sore shoulders. Lugging 23 textbooks across significant amount of campus space and up 4 flights of stairs is no joke. Well at least that's out of the way. Hate my residence!!! People here are really noisy. Kind of Inconsiderate to be making all the noise in the HALLWAYS where everyone can hear you. The Girls Wing is so much quieter..man..why i so suay sia. And i can hear some girl telling some guy how much she can drink. *rolls eyes* uh..not a wise move. Well i think i did a pretty good job of navigating around campus. Didn't get lost at all.. Met Ellie on the way to Curtis Lecture Hall, nice to see someone familiar around. But walking back From Accolade East Building after my 9 pm class, is quite scary. Its cold and dark and its soooooo faaaaar awaaaaay. From Founders. Ah well i'll get used to it. Oh and the best news of the day!!! Deutschland 13 San Marino 0!!!!!!!!! Poldi!Schweini!Balla!Klose!Hitzlsperger!M.Friedrich!Schnix! ![]() ![]() I came back after the bookstore and the live ticker thing was at 11-0 already!! Awesome score. Yeah i know its just San Marino who are made up of students, bakers, carpenters and a police officer. But its still an awesome confidence booster and also great for the players to get their international goal tally up..Poldi 5 goals in 2 games! And its the record for Europe and Germany in a Euro Quali. So great! I'm waiting for someone to post on youtube. Can't believe i missed this game. And of course, the Cable channels back home are still being incredibly biased towards England. France beat Italy 3-1. I am finally appeased. So this is kind of long overdue..
I realised today that having relatives when u're in a strange new country is really important and most of the time, comforting. Mom left on Sunday and I was really not sure how'd i handle it but it turned out pretty good. I didn't cry like i thought i would. Sorta told myself, okay u're 18..well technically 17, THIS should not be a PROBLEM!! 17 is OLD! Mom left home when she was 17 so i should not have an excuse to act like a baby. I consider myself lucky and blessed to be able to make it into university at 17. Most people i've met are 19 and above. It's kinda cool really. I'll be done with a BA by the time i'm 21! I wanna get my masters before i'm 25. It takes 2 years to do and if those prestigious schools i'm eyeing on the east coast of the United States require some working experience before enrolling..yep 25 is a good target..uh..okay u don't need to hear about my future ambitions. Ahh..my stupid skin is having its worst breakout ever. Another thing u don't need to know about. Today for dinner, aunty suan chin bought char siu, duck and made cucumber with sesame oil. It smelt like CHICKEN RICE!!!!!! I thought she was making that, but nope..the cucumber with sesame oil was awesome..it smelt great, tasted great. Yum yum yum. Not chicken rice but better than nothing i guess. I woke up late today and sorta had the house to myself, so i did what Mom told me to do and make myself useful around the house. Cleaned up the kitchen and sorted out the plates and cutlery. Oh and my reward, watching the US open on Tv!! Canadian Coverage is much better than ESPN/STAR SPORTS(But i still MISS MY FOOTBALL!) Well it feels much better to watch the tournament without having to switch your body clock to the 12 hour difference. But it means missing the NIGHT Sessions on Arthur Ashe cause i'm now back in my dorm...no TV!! I wish i had a TV now.. Okay stop and think. No TV, No distractions. Great. The Long awaited pictures of my room are here!!! I still think its freaking bare and wanted to wait till longer to decorate the walls and stuff and wait till i get all my books and fill up the 80% empty shelves before posting but i think I should just let you take a look. So here goes...maybe by winter or whenever my room's looking much better i'll post pics again! ![]() Kinda messy..too many wires, too little hiding spaces. Oh its my desk btw. and thats the door..with all the stuff hanging on it and on the bottom left, that's the fridge and yes the horrible Empty shelves. Room at Home beats Dorm Room. NEXT.... ![]() Okay My BED!! Its a very COMFY BED! Almost on par with the one i have at home. and that's a huge compliment coming from a homey person like me. D'YA HEAR THAT DORM BED? I seriously don't know how i'm going to drag myself out of bed each morning to go to class. Especially during winter..when it's going to be so freaking cold, and the heating's on and the bed's comfy and i have my steaming cup of Marmite..uh well, when winter comes around you'll hear about it! Oh and that chicken no, uh ROOSTER(thats a better word), is for Feng Shui Purposes. I can only explain that much. MOVING ON... ![]() The ONLY window in my room and the dresser and wardrobe. Man it looks old.. Well i'll have to make do with it. At least it didn't just come with the dresser. Room at Home wins Hands Down. FINALLY.. ![]() I LOVE MY RUG. Tie btween Room at Home and Dorm Room. And in other news, *coughs* SPorts news *coughs* Andre Agassi finally retires!! God he was so emotional..can't blame him. and the standing ovation the other players gave him in the locker room!! It's hard not to be affected. Farewell Andre!! Come back and commentate soon! I admit i'm completely useless at searching for football related news on the internet. Well I can, i just don't like to. So Angeline told me that M.U rejected Mascherano and Tevez??? Um..David Gill..HELLO??? Ok,my rational self tried to explain to my shocked self how this travesty could have occured. 1. We really really really really really want Owen Hargreaves. So Mascherano as Defensive MF is out. 2. We don't have the money. 3. its not part of our club's policy to sign players on Loan. 4. Fergie had a knee jerk reaction to saying we don't need them cause of the great start to the season. 5. Fergie has really lost it. 6. Argh what am i thinking, Fergie HAS lost it. Next, Cashley-Gallas situation, Awwww we knew it was going to happen. Now this little piece of news i found Out by myself, on the Internet! Not so useless after all. I am expecting a two digit score to nil when Germany plays San Marino on wednesday. DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES!!!!! R.I.P Steve Irwin. Its the first day of classes tmr!! I realise i have four days of classes only.. COOL. And i hope the rest of you are enjoying your holidays!! (For the TP people!) Study Hard!(for the Unfortunate ones having to take A's Prelims and A's itself) Oh and this is my exact address if u wanna send any mail or packages to moi.. Wei Ru Soh Room D404, Founders Residence York University 4700 Keele Street Toronto, ON M3J 1P3 Canada Till Next time................ Andy Roddick on his win over German Qualifier, Benjamin Becker, who'd knocked out Andre Agassi in the final tournament of the 36 year old's career. 1/9/2006: 6 years after i'd started drinking, i finally got busted. LOL. Funny, the legal drinking age in Ontario is 19! Hey S'pore! We're not so bad after all! And the U.S is 21..weird. END soliloquy88 at 9:37 AM | Comment ~~~~~ |
