Boxing Day everybody

Today, we went shopping in the morning. The malls here open at 7am and there's a big boxing day sale. Yes, so by noon, i was beat. Shopping is actually a good way to feel tired.

So anyways, as you all know(okay maybe not), THE TENNIS SEASON IS STARTING!!! This Saturday, the Hopman cup begins!! Scheisse!! I can't watch..unless..erm.. maybe i'll try my luck on the channels here. The teams are GREAT this year!! I mean, Tursunov, Golovin and Mario Ancic is going to play with his little sister!! Okay this is not some big fancy tournament but i really like to watch it because its a chance to watch the players you dont really get to see play at grand slams or other important tournaments. Plus, i love the Hopman cup system. Male and Female represent their country in davis/fed cup format. Two Singles rubber and one doubles rubber, the winning team goes on to the next round. Also, its the tournament where you're guaranteed some good doubles action!! I love watching doubles! Sometimes i think doubles is what makes tennis.

Crap lah all the players i want to watch are playing!!

Here's the teams playing this year:

Australia: Alicia Molik and Mark Phillippoussis ( Aussie Aussie OI OI OI)

Croatia: Sanja Ancic and Mario Ancic

Czech Republic: Lucie Safarova and Tomas Berdych( The cutest couple!!! They're dating btw)

France: Tatiana Golovin and Jerome Haehnel ( If it was Richard Gasquet i will be kicking myself..and the tv)

India: Sania Mirza and Rohann Bopanna

Russia: Nadia Petrova and Dmitry Tursunov(OMG MITYA!!! Ia Vas Liubliu! [or at least i think tts how its spelled..courtesy of Charles Bronson's character in THE GREAT ESCAPE])

Spain: Anabel Medina Garrigues and Tommy Robredo

U.S.A: Ashley Harkleroad and Mardy Fish

So, U.S.A is the defending champion..omg i totally miss Taylor Dent's serves. They were freakin' awesome. I don't think U.S.A can take it this year.. No Dent's powerful serve and no doubles and volley specialist Lisa Raymond.

This entry is kind of technical i guess. No one's really that into tennis right? haha, but Australian Open is coming up! and blah i can't watch. Okay this reminds me, that this time last year, we were in the lab doing projects and i was checking the australian open website every two seconds and making comments like: Wah! and Shit! and Crap i missed it! and Siew Ying, in a very exasparated but calm sort of way would say: Aiyo, It's just tennis. (NO IT'S NOT!) Thank you Siew Ying for listening to me whine about the fact that i was missing all those matches. Even if it wasn't irritating to you(which i'm sure it was), it was to me. Lol. of course, i had to check covertly so super focused Jie xin didn't catch me..heh heh heh *rubs hands evilly..no for warmth*

Now that anecdote would be more for all of you eh? I'm stopping now.

4 more days to Hopman Cup.
5 more days to the New Year.
19 more days to the Australian Open.

hey all hey all

Its been a long break ......................... hence the many dots

anyways, nothing much has been going on since the date of my last post.. Christmas is coming soon! and i can't help not feeling excited because...where is the snow?????????????????

Yep thats right, the weather is betraying me! well that's a tad dramatic. I mean what is christmas w/o snow? 17 long years of Christmas with no Snow and on the 18th, where and when there's SUPPOSED to be snow there's no bloody snow!!! WHERE IS THE BLOODY SNOW? i do realise i sound like an idiot but please allow my cathartic purging. I guess playing Dean Martin's White Christmas or Let it Snow over and over again isn't really helping. At all. Dean Martin sings the best Christmas songs. Along with Ella and Frank.

And i was so happy at the start of December where it snowed. Should have saved the snow for now!

Oh Wednesday Night was Ruey's and Yiing's school music night. it was really good! Special mention has to go to Ruey's Strings Club performance. Among all the groups performing his was the only one not led by a teacher. Plus, he formed the club himself. IMO it was the best performance of the night, not being biased or anything but it really was. Amazingly talented. I always liked hearing and watching people play the violin, there's something very elegant about the whole thing. Well there was a dark period of time where i hated the instrument b/c my brother was just learning how to play it..and well it sounded terrible. It didn't help that it was my O level year and the violin making horrible screeching sounds while i was trying to study just ruined it for me. But Violin's back on my good side now.

Okay that's pretty much it.. hope you guys are enjoying the weather and have a Merry X'mas!

Today was the last day of Midterms!

I woke up early today and went to Tim Horton's for a coffee and muffin, just couldn't stay in my room anymore!! I realised how important it is to your condition when studying to have someone to talk to and relax abit. Sure there are the dorm mates but its not the same..Its not like, i'll say it, home. A home-y environment. and i had No TV! TV was one of the things i went to when i was tired of studying.

But anyway, that is over, so i don't have to deal with these feelings till, lets see..end of march. Okay, so today's midterm was Civilisation in Medieval and Renaissance Europe, and yes, i'm about to talk more about the attitude towards exams here.

This is the first exam i took where, the professors hand out CHRISTMAS CANDY during the exam. The faculty involved in this course are a fun bunch. I just realised how much Tom Cohen looks like a mad scientist. With his glasses, and his wiry white hair sticking up like he's just been electrocuted. And then, 15 minutes toward the end of the exam, he demanded that everyone dropped their pens and stand up and stretch. and yes, demanded. Like " C'mon, put down those pens, get up! up up UP!" Strange but really nice. I love the attitude towards exams here. The feeling, when you're stressed about writing an exam, and then your professor comes up to you, reaches into a nice big box with a big ribbon on it and stripes, reaches into it, pulls out those striped candy canes "This is for you, Happy Holidays!" and smile the big weird goofy mad scientist smile. Being able to suck on a candy cane while writing an exam essay is the best feeling ever.

More about the weather, okay, i am not enjoying it. The snow's pretty and all, but the wind suuucks. It hurts when it blows! And i would be walking to class and my face would be in pain, that when the building comes into sight, i mentally urge myself to run and my face is of course, searing with pain from the piercing wind, then of course, you can't run that fast and have to watch where you put your feet because there are patches of black ice and you could go sliding. I've seen it, its not fun. Usually i bolt when i come to within 3 feet of a building. Then once you get in the building, its warm. You enjoy it for 5 minutes, defrosting from the cold, and then, you know what, its getting kinda hot in here. You sweat a little, naturally. and oh look at the time! Time to head out into the killer wind and black ice, then you know, sweat, well..just makes it so much colder.

But I would like to point out that, i went through all that, with no scarf and no gloves and no beanie hat. So add those three items, i'm sure it won't be half as bad. I'm thinking of getting one of those masks that covers your entire face and only shows your eyes. Probably'll look really dumb, i guess i'll just walk with my head down, thats what the beanie hat and my hair is for. I don't think my hair has ever been summoned to carry out such important, front line battle duty before. Plus, the dry air makes it all static-y. It makes the texture so weird. I mildly electrocute myself when i touch my hair.

Okay thats the end of half the term for me. So relieved, it feels nice, to know there's no more studying, note taking and reading for a month. Good luck to all of you taking Midterms!

It SNOWED today!!!!!!

Finally!

Well it didn't really snow that heavily, it was flurrying/snowing i guess. I had a nice surprise this morning when i opened my curtains..patches of white on the ground, on tree branches! It was really beautiful. Well not that beautiful yet..but you know its been a long time since i got accquainted with snow.

Holly came by knocking and said: "hey it snowed overnight, do your funky f.o.b thang!!"

Just now, it really snowed/flurried! As in actually coming down from the sky..i've never experienced that before. So i put on the gloves and beanie hat and coat and went outside with my camera.

The lobby porter saw me heading outside looking rather excited, chuckled and hollered: First time eh?

YEAH!

So here are some pictures..its not that nice, but i tried to get the best snow patches for you all back in sweaty/sticky/rainy/sunny SG. The view from my room window is great but unfortunately, i can't take a proper picture with the window closed and I don't wanna open the window cause its below freezing outside and i had to close the window for a whole day for the heating to make my room nice and toasty again. Looks like we may have a White Christmas after all....

Okay there is something seriously wrong with Blogger, i've been trying to upload those damn picture 6 times now.. Wait till i try again!

Its my biirthdaaay....

those few words are startingly self centered.

ANyway, I'm 18!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wooooooooooo

Considered an adult already i guess. I'm not really feeling in a festive mood, its weird. Maybe its the first birthday of unfamiliarity? A few different slices of cake can get you only that far. I think this is the first birthday i've had 4 different slices of cake thrust upon me(Thanks guys: Vlad, Jamie, Holly, Evan). Now i'm feeling sick.

And ya know what sucks even more? This: Knowing that i can legally drink if i were back home but yet i can't do it here!! Its extremely annoying and frustrating. My friend did buy a drink for me, but its not the same!! I had to sip or rather gulp covertly. Not. Fun.

Another damper on the mood: MID TERMS.

I'm taking a little break today. Actually i wanted to go full steam ahead, but i thought: screw it, i've been at it since last week and I need a little breather. I have Legitimate reasons!!! Eighteenth Birthday is a big deal! So I lasted until 4.30pm before I finally convinced myself that studying on your birthday is the most nonsensical thing to do and finally shut the books.

Yeah so i was disturbed out of my slumber by the phone ringing. Housing Complex called. A nice girl with a way too perky voice chirped in my ear: We have a package for you!!!! Mom's birthday present for moi had arrived, how fitting, a birthday mail wake up call. So i trudged off to shower and went to collect my package. It was super rainy and windy outside and my hair got all messed up. And i just washed and blew dry!!(well, it is My birthday) Mom sent me this beautiful blue Jim Thompson tote bag, thanks mom! I love it.

I had my first mid term on Tuesday and I feel that i have to share a little about the general attitude towards exams here.

Firstly, Tuesday 28th Nov: Mid Term for Social Science 1310: Introduction to Communications.
Walked into the Nice big lecture hall, sat down near the front, people all around me: "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkk, i am soooooooooooooooo screeeeeeeeweed. Are you screwed?" or "I'm just gonna bullshit"

Okay well, its just that i'm from Singapore, I don't hear stuff like that.

And then yesterday, i attended a tutorial that i didn't have too, but i wanted to, great to squeeze in some review even if it isn't my tutorial and tutor. It was for Huma 1125: Civilisation in Medieval and Renaissance Europe. and frankly, i haven't learned squat about Civilisation in Medieval Europe(Medieval in Fall, Renaissance in Winter). They should really rename it, Analyzing great literature of Medieval Europe. But i like it anyway. And Janet Ritch said, "the mid term is only 15% of your grade, so don't get too stressed out over it all right?"

I stared and blinked. What?

Okay, i have NEVER heard a teacher say that before. Really, NEVER. I don't know about any of you, but yeah, i was going: wow..this is..amazing. Our Mid terms in TP are 15% as well and no tutor ever said anything about relaxing!!

As much as this was a shock, it has a positive effect i guess. I know i still have to study but it doesn't feel that daunting anymore. Plus, Janet Ritch is a nice tutor, she really knows her stuff. Her PHd is in Medieval Literature i think..French Medieval Literature. Plus she looks kinda cool actually, with pre mature grey hair. Okay i don't know why i'm saying this. I guess alchohol and 4 types of cake don't mix.

Okay well that's my 18th birthday soliloquy. Thanks to all who wished me Happy birthday! Miss all of ya'll very much.
